A grey mat with no print: the wide-arc pattern is carved into the pile and shows only at an angle to the light. Neutral grey is the safest choice for tiling of any shade.

The pattern here is carved into the pile rather than printed, so it cannot rub off or fade — it lasts as long as the pile does. The wide arcs are visible only at an angle to the light, so the mat looks different through the day. A mid-tone grey is the most neutral option in the selection: it argues with neither warm nor cool tiling.

Polyester works on speed in a bathroom: the fibre takes almost no water into itself, so the mat dries between the morning and the evening shower and never has time to go damp. Print holds longer on synthetics than on natural fibre, and the pattern does not fade in the wash.

Washing every two or three weeks at 40 °C is enough; in between, shake the mat out and let it dry. Bleach and drying on a hot radiator both shorten the life of the pile.
