Persian rugs: a thousand years of weaving, in your home
When people talk about the finest rug in the world, they mean a Persian rug. It is the benchmark every other carpet is measured against. Hottabych brings these pieces in directly from Iran, where the craft began: hand-knotted Iranian rugs for collectors, and machine-woven pieces for those who want the same design language at a different scale of commitment.
Types of Persian rug: Nain, Tabriz, Qom
A Persian rug is named after the city whose weaving school produced it. Each school has its own handwriting — knot density, palette, and the way the pattern is drawn. Four of them are represented in the salon right now.
- Nain. A quiet palette: blue, grey-blue, cream, light green. A fine floral field around a central medallion, with silk worked into the wool to outline the drawing — which is why the pattern looks lit from within.
- Tabriz. The most recognisable classic: dense pile, a large medallion, a border built from several frames. Some are pictorial, showing a hunt, a garden or a scene from a poem. This is the only school we carry in 300×400 cm.
- Qom. The home of silk weaving. Pure silk gives a shifting sheen: the rug changes shade depending on where you stand and how the light falls.
- Azerbaijan. The north-western school next door to Tabriz — the same medallion geometry, but a warmer and softer palette.
Wool or silk?
- Wool rugs. The right choice for a living room or bedroom. Iranian wool carries more natural lanolin and more spring than European wool, so the pile does not break down and recovers underfoot.
- Silk rugs. These are bought to be looked at as much as walked on. Silk holds far finer detail and gives the drawing a depth that wool cannot.
How to tell a real Persian rug
Four things you can check yourself, without an expert and without a loupe.
- The back repeats the front. On a hand-knotted rug the pattern reads as clearly from the reverse as from the face, and individual knots are visible. A machine-made rug hides its back under a backing or a woven mesh.
- The fringe is part of the foundation. On a hand-knotted rug the fringe threads come out of the rug itself — they are its warp. A fringe sewn on separately means machine production.
- Slight irregularity. A hand-knotted rug is never perfectly symmetrical: border lines drift a little, and the wool shifts tone in horizontal bands. That banding is abrash — the trace of yarn dyed in separate small batches — not a fault.
- Material. This tradition works in wool, silk, or the two together. A Persian rug is never woven from synthetic yarn.

Frequently asked questions
Are Persian and Iranian rugs the same thing?
Yes. Persia was the country's name until 1935, and the weaving tradition is thousands of years older than either name. Both words describe a rug woven in Iran according to one of its regional schools.
How is a Persian rug different from a Turkish one?
The knot and the drawing. Iranian weavers use the asymmetric (Persian) knot, which carries finer, more flowing lines — hence the floral, curvilinear fields. The Turkish school uses the symmetric knot and leans towards geometry.
Does a Persian rug work in a contemporary interior?
Yes, if you keep to a quiet palette. The Nain school in blue-grey and cream reads as a neutral ground and does not argue with plain modern furniture. Saturated red-and-blue Tabriz pieces sit better with classical or dark timber detailing.
What sizes are available?
Four formats: 160×230, 200×300, 250×350 and 300×400 cm. The 200×300 format is the usual living-room choice — it takes a sofa and a coffee table with room to spare at the edges.
How do you care for a silk rug?
Vacuum without a turbo brush, along the pile; leave wet cleaning to a specialist. Silk does not tolerate direct sun, which bleaches the colour, so keep the rug away from an uncurtained window. Turn it 180° every few months so the pile wears evenly.
Can I see the rug in person?
Yes. The rugs are in the salon, and we bring them out for a fitting — a rug reads differently in a room than it does in a photograph. Ask a consultant about arrangements.
