Tabriz, in north-western Iran, is one of the oldest weaving cities in the country, and it is the school that made the pictorial rug famous. Instead of a repeating pattern, a storyline rug builds a whole scene into the pile: figures, architecture and garden motifs drawn with the fine knot density Tabriz workshops are known for. This piece is knotted entirely by hand from natural wool with silk highlights, so the drawing stays crisp even in the smallest details.

The palette runs through warm beige, deep brown and muted red. Silk threads sit in the highlights and catch the light, which gives the scene depth and makes the colours shift slightly as you walk around the rug. It works best in a classic, neoclassical or art deco interior, next to natural wood, leather and brass.

At 300×400 cm this is a room-defining format. In a large living room it holds the sofa, armchairs and coffee table together; in a hall or a dining room it carries a full table with chairs pulled out. Because the pile is wool with silk, it stands up to daily use and keeps its shape under furniture legs.
