The design

The centre of the composition is a golden star-shaped medallion, and rings of floral tracery in burgundy, chestnut and ochre circle around it. Nearer the edge the drawing gathers into dark panels, while the outer ring stays cream with a narrow rim. The dense pattern makes the rug look deep and warm, and even in a dim room the golden centre reads at once.

Handmade, wool, cotton base

Reily is made by hand in England: a wool pile on a cotton base. White fringe is left at the edge as the continuation of the base. The wool pile is springy and holds its shape, and the slight irregularity of the lines — a trace of hand weaving — sets such a rug apart from a machine-made one.

A 240×240 circle

Care

A wool rug is vacuumed along the pile without catching the fringe, and the fringe is combed by hand. Blot spills, and leave deep cleaning to specialists. A round rug is turned once a year so the pile wears evenly.
