Why a circle behaves differently

A round rug has no front and no back: the composition reads the same from every side, which is why it goes under a round table, into a bay window, or at the centre of a room where several routes meet. The 240 cm figure is a diameter, not the side of a square — under a 120 cm table it leaves 60 cm all round for a chair to be pushed back.

Colour and pattern

The field is a saturated emerald. At the centre sits a cream and gold medallion with a bouquet of roses, then a burgundy ring with a serrated motif, then a cream border of floral garlands. The outlines are carved, so gold and green are separated by pile height as well as by colour. Green at this intensity sets the tone for the whole room: it is easier to build textiles around it than to fit it into a finished palette.

The fringe around the circle

A fringe carried around the whole circumference is the most vulnerable part of this rug: never vacuum it with a brush head, comb it by hand or with a soft comb in one direction. If the rug sits under a chair, make sure the legs do not ride onto the fringe. Otherwise the care is standard for wool — dry cleaning regularly, wet cleaning by a specialist.
