Aubusson-style wool rug 200×300 beige-grey Obusson ash

What Aubusson means

Aubusson is a French weaving style: rounded medallions, garlands of roses, acanthus leaves and bouquets tied with ribbons on a light field. The Obusson ash rug keeps to exactly this scheme. An oval with a bouquet of roses sits in the middle, a wreath of flowers winds around it, and in the corners of the field stand cartouches with matching bouquets.

Palette

The colour here is neither beige nor grey but something between: an ash ground, creamy roses, dusty pink buds, sage leaves and pale blue ribbons. Golden acanthus scrolls add a warm note without leaving the muted range. An outer grey-lilac border closes the design.

Surface and edges

The photographs show the flowers standing slightly above the ground: the design is carved, so the surface turns out sculptural. There is a flat binding in the border colour along the edge rather than fringe, so the rug lies neatly against a wall and under furniture.
