The Ushak design

Ushak is an old type of carpet from western Anatolia with large, loosely scattered ornament. Here the field is sandy cream, covered with palmettes, star-shaped flowers and branches drawn in olive, grey-green, smoky blue and brown. A dark line frames the central field, and beyond it lies a wide turquoise border with the same plant motif. There are no sharp contrasts: the whole palette is soft and dusty.

Texture

The rug is woven by hand in wool. The pile is of medium height with a gentle shift of colour; the close-ups show the same ground moving from cream to golden. This effect, called abrash, comes from yarn dyed in different batches and is typical of Ushak rugs. The short ends keep their fringe, and the back is firm.

Size and placement

The 240×300 cm format suits a living room of 16–20 square metres: upholstered furniture stands on the rug with its front legs, leaving a strip of floor at the sides. It also fits a study with wooden furniture. Another rug with a quiet European palette is Obusson Ash 200×300, and a richer green alternative is Bomon 170×240.

Care

Vacuum without a beater brush and blot spills. A light field dislikes direct sun all day, so turn the rug once a year. Further traditional designs are in the classic rugs section.
