Wool rug Green Spikelet 300×400

Composition

The rug is laid out symmetrically. In the centre, a rosette of pointed leaves sits inside a double wreath of roses, violets and small buds. Curved ribbons and acanthus scrolls run from it towards the corners, and each corner holds a bouquet tied with a raspberry-coloured bow. A wide cream frame with a thin rust line closes the field. The palette is soft: grass green, peach, powder pink and a touch of terracotta.

How it is made

The rug is woven by hand in wool. After weaving, the maker cuts along the outlines of flowers and leaves, and the motif rises a few millimetres above the ground; the large photos show the depth of each petal. The pile is thick and soft, the sides are bound with a firm edge, and the short ends carry a fringe.

The 300×400 format

This size is meant for a room of 20 square metres or more: a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table all fit on it. The same Aubusson-style drawing in a smaller oval is Green Classic 200×300, and a wool-and-silk rug in a quieter olive tone is Bomon 170×240.

Care

Vacuum along the pile without a beater brush. Carved grooves sometimes collect dust, so go over them with a soft nozzle. Turn the rug 180 degrees once a year. Other traditional designs are in the classic rugs section.
