Aubusson-style wool rug 300×400 turquoise Obusson turquoise

The design

The layout follows the French Aubusson scheme: a quiet field and a rich frame. The mint-turquoise ground is left almost empty, an oval wreath of small roses lies in the centre and golden acanthus leaves with bouquets stretch towards the corners. The wide cream border is made of rosettes, scrolls and roses in a muted coral tone, with round medallions set into its long sides. Pale fringe finishes the short ends.

Wool, made by hand

The rug is hand-woven from wool. The pattern is lightly carved: the outlines of roses and leaves are trimmed, so the drawing reads even in soft light. Wool does not build static and holds a pastel colour for years.

Where it fits

The 300×400 cm format suits a large living room, a dining table for eight or a hall. The same design in an oval of wool and silk is Obusson turquoise 250×350, and an ash-coloured version is Obusson ash. Other traditional patterns are in classic rugs, and hand-knotted pieces are among the handmade and designer rugs.

Care

A light field is best vacuumed regularly, along the pile. Keep the fringe out of the brush and comb it by hand. Turn the rug once a year so that the pile wears evenly.
